I used to eat a healthy breakfast and lunch but tended to fall apart at dinner and often made poor food choices. I would be tired at the end of the day and needed to go grocery shopping since I had nothing at home for dinner. I would go to the store with a food list and promise myself I would avoid the bakery and candy isle. I would enter the store looking for the items on my list and all of a sudden an alien would take over my cart and the next thing I knew, I was ordering cookies from the bakery. So much for a healthy dinner!

Planning meals at least a day in advance solves three important issues related to weight loss. First, planning ahead removes excessive thinking about food. What you’re going to eat, where you’re going to get the food, etc. are gone. You know exactly what you’re going to eat and have the food readily available. Secondly, planning removes the sudden urge to grab temptations presented in the environment. You’ve already planned your daily meals and have the food on hand. Finally, planning ahead doesn’t require you to use willpower to avoid unhealthy food choices. Our willpower is strongest in the morning and becomes depleted as the day progresses. Planning ahead removes the need to grocery shop and the need to be strong at the end of the day.
